Behind Vantage: artwork that connects the world and the gameplay

Behind Vantage: artwork that connects the world and the gameplay

Artist Valentina Filić explains how Vantage’s first-person location illustrations were planned on a grid so neighboring landscapes connect logically. Her behind-the-scenes examples show how collaboration and carefully placed visual details can make artwork part of exploration and gameplay. Alice in Wonderland

Alice in Wonderland

I am experimenting with an Alice in Wonderland themed card game. Players roll dice and place them on cards to score. Today I'm doing rapid iteration with ChatGPT This is the first iteration of card art and graphics: Not bad. But, the characters are a bit to childish. For the second iteration I went for a more adult style: OK. Wow. This is over the top. I swung a little too far to the opposite extreme. This is not for a mass market including parents and kids. Ok, on to the next iteration. Next, I adjusted for more "bright and happy": Good. Headed in the right direction. The characters are happy and the environment is bright. However the images are still too adult. And, they are highly detailed and busy. I want the characters to pop. So its on to the next iteration. Next, I zoomed in with a focus on the Characters. These are easily discerned from the background. But, perhaps, zoomed in too far. Without the full figure displayed, they tend to look similar. Somehow, facial expressions took a step backwards, as well. Some express suspicion or anger. No thanks. Time to make some adjustments. For the next round I zoomed out and went for "odd, lovable humor." Ah. Better. Seems "on target" for parents and kids. Characters are odd and adorable with interesting facial expressions. Full body posses show action. Card frames, the font size and style were all chosen by AI, not me. But, it looks pretty cohesive. Final Summary This is a good iteration. I'm still looking for something more quirky and distinctive. But I'm headed on a good trajectory.
